Failed Headlight Seal

A failed headlight seal lets moisture and water seep into the housing through the lens-to-housing joint. This is one of the most common causes of persistent condensation inside BMW headlights. While brief fogging after weather changes is normal, recurring droplets or pooled water inside the lamp signals a broken or deteriorated seal that needs attention.
What it feels like
You'll notice condensation, fog, or water droplets visible inside the headlight lens. The moisture may appear after rain, a car wash, or overnight temperature swings. Unlike temporary fogging that clears as the lamp warms up, a failed seal causes moisture to return quickly or persist for hours. In severe cases, water pools at the bottom of the housing. The headlight may still work, but the water can cloud the lens, reduce light output, and eventually corrode the reflector or bulb contacts.
How to confirm it
- Inspect the seam where the clear lens meets the plastic housing. Look for gaps, lifted adhesive, cracks, or any visible separation between the two parts.
- Dry the headlight fully using a heat gun or by leaving it in the sun for an hour. Once completely dry, carefully apply soapy water or a smoke test (incense smoke works) around the perimeter of the lens-to-housing joint to detect air leaks.
- Monitor the lamp over several days, especially after rain or washing. If condensation returns within hours or after temperature changes, the seal is compromised.
- If the soap test shows bubbles forming at the seam or smoke gets pulled inward, the seal is failing and moisture will continue to enter.
