A cracked lens or housing allows water to seep into the headlight assembly, causing persistent fogging, condensation droplets, or visible liquid pooling inside the lamp. Unlike brief morning condensation that clears with heat, this damage creates ongoing moisture problems. Cracks typically form at the lens-to-body joint, from impact damage, or from overtightened fasteners during previous service. Water trapped inside can corrode internal electronics and degrade beam output over time.
What it feels like
You'll notice fogging or condensation that does not clear after the headlight warms up during driving. Water may collect as visible droplets on the inner lens surface, stream down the back shell, or pool at the bottom near any electronic modules. The issue is usually one-sided, matching the damaged lamp. On damp mornings or after rain, the fogging appears quickly and persists for hours or days rather than clearing within 30 minutes of operation. Beam pattern may appear slightly dimmed or scattered if water film builds up on the reflector.
How to confirm it
- Inspect both the front lens and rear housing shell for visible cracks, stress lines, or impact marks. Pay close attention to the joint where the lens meets the plastic body, as this is a common failure point.
- Check whether condensation is accompanied by water droplets, streaks, or pooling at the bottom of the lamp rather than light fog that would be normal on cold mornings.
- Use a smoke test (incense or compressed air with a tracer) around the lens perimeter and housing seams to identify where air is leaking in. Pressure-test the lamp if available at a shop.
- Review recent service history on that side. Check mounting fasteners for signs of overtightening or misalignment that could have cracked the housing during reassembly.
