Normal temporary condensation inside a BMW headlight is typical behavior in cold or damp conditions, especially after the vehicle has been parked for several hours. The fogging appears on the inside surface of the lens and usually clears on its own once the headlight warms up from operation. BMW recognizes this as a cosmetic issue rather than a defect when it clears completely and does not return persistently.
What it feels like
You notice a hazy or cloudy film inside the headlight lens, most obvious when looking at the light from outside the vehicle. The fogging typically appears during or shortly after cold, rainy, or humid weather. Both headlights may show the same light misting. Once you drive and the headlights warm up, the condensation evaporates and clarity returns. The light output itself is not reduced, and no water droplets or pooling are visible inside the housing.
How to confirm it
- Turn on the headlights and allow them to run for 10 to 15 minutes. Watch whether the interior fogging gradually clears as heat builds up inside the lamp.
- Compare both headlights side by side. If both show identical light fogging that clears at roughly the same rate, the behavior is symmetrical and typical.
- Check the interior of each headlight for water droplets, streams, or pooling at the bottom of the housing. These signs indicate water ingress rather than surface condensation.
- Note the conditions when fogging appears. If it occurs consistently only after cold, damp, or rainy parking periods and clears with heat, the diagnosis points to normal condensation.
