A cracked lens or housing lets moisture seep into the headlight assembly, causing fogging that returns even after you dry it out. Stone chips, impacts, or stress cracks are the usual culprits. Unlike temporary condensation that clears on its own, a true crack allows humid air and water to enter repeatedly, leaving puddles, drip marks, or corrosion inside the lamp.
What it feels like
You notice fog or haze inside the headlight that persists or comes back within hours or days of drying it out. The fogging may be worse in humid weather or after rain. In some cases you'll see actual water pooling at the bottom of the lens, drip marks on the interior surfaces, or brown corrosion around the reflector. The headlight output may dim slightly if moisture is heavy enough. Unlike condensation that vanishes within 20 to 30 minutes of driving, this fogging sticks around.
How to confirm it
- Inspect the front lens, rear housing, mounting tabs, and corners closely under bright light for hairline cracks, chips, or impact damage. Use a magnifying glass if the crack is fine.
- Check around screw points, mounting points, and any areas that were disturbed during previous service work, since these are weak spots for seal failure.
- If no visible crack appears, use a smoke test or low-pressure air test to identify where moisture is entering. A handheld smoke pen held near the lens edges will show air leakage paths.
- If a crack is confirmed and cannot be sealed reliably with epoxy or lens repair kits, the lens or housing assembly must be replaced.
