Headlight seal failure occurs when the adhesive or gasket bond between the lens and housing degrades, allowing moisture to enter the lamp assembly. On BMWs, this typically shows up as fogging or condensation inside the headlight, particularly after rain, car washes, or driving in humid conditions. The problem ranges from minor cosmetic haze to serious water pooling that can corrode internal reflectors and wiring.
What it feels like
You'll notice a cloudy or hazy appearance inside one or both headlights, often worse when the car is parked and cooling down. The fogging may appear on the inside of the lens and look like breath marks on a window. After heavy rain or a car wash, you might see actual water droplets, drip marks, or small puddles sitting at the bottom of the lamp. The haze may come and go depending on weather and temperature, but persistent fogging that doesn't clear after several hours of dry conditions signals genuine water ingress rather than normal condensation.
How to confirm it
- Inspect the seam where the lens meets the housing. Look for gaps, lifted or peeling adhesive, visible cracks, or any separation along the perimeter. Use a flashlight and run your finger around the joint to feel for lifting edges.
- Park the car in a dry, warm location and monitor the fogging over 2-3 hours. True water ingress will persist or worsen; temporary condensation clears quickly as the lamp warms.
- Perform a smoke test or use a hair dryer on low heat aimed at the seam while watching for air disturbance that indicates a leak path. A pressure test (using compressed air around the sealed joint) can also pinpoint exact leak locations.
- Check for corrosion, rust, or discoloration on the reflector or internal wiring visible through the lens. These confirm sustained water exposure inside the lamp.
Parts that fix it
Replacement lens covers address cosmetic fogging and seal the lamp against future moisture entry. Choose the unit that matches your model and generation.
