Dry or worn strut mounts consist of rubber bushings and metal hardware that connect the top of the shock absorber to the chassis. Over time, the rubber deteriorates, cracks, or loses preload, allowing movement and creaking. This noise typically appears during steering input at standstill or low speed, and worsens as the rubber ages or fasteners loosen. On BMWs, strut mount wear is common after 80,000 miles or more, especially if the suspension has not been serviced.

What it feels like

You will hear a creaking or groaning noise from the front suspension, usually from the area near the top of the engine bay where the strut tower sits. The noise often appears when you turn the steering wheel left or right while parked or moving slowly. Some owners report a single creak per turn, others describe a squeaking or binding sensation that repeats as the suspension cycles. The noise may worsen on rough roads or during weight transfer, and it typically does not affect braking or steering response, though the ride may feel slightly less composed.

How to confirm it

  1. Park on level ground, turn the steering wheel fully left and then fully right while listening carefully at the top of the strut tower (near the firewall). A clear creak or groan points to strut mount wear.
  2. Open the hood and inspect the upper strut mount rubber for visible cracks, splitting, or collapse. Look for any horizontal movement of the mount relative to the tower when you push down on the fender.
  3. Check the fasteners that hold the upper mount to the strut tower. They should be tight and seated flush. If any bolt or nut is loose, torque it to BMW specification with the suspension at ride height (car on wheels, not on a lift).
  4. Drive over a bumpy section of road at low speed and note whether the creaking occurs only when steering or also during vertical suspension movement. Creaking only on steering points to the strut mount; creaking over bumps suggests control-arm bushings.
