Sway bar bushings and end links wear out over time as rubber hardens and cracks, or brackets loosen under cornering and bump loads. When this happens, the stabilizer bar loses rigidity and metal parts rattle or creak against each other. BMW owners notice this most when turning, crossing uneven pavement, or during body roll on curves. It is a maintenance-level fix that improves suspension feel and eliminates noise.
What it feels like
A creaking or clunking noise that comes from the front or rear suspension, typically worse during hard cornering or when driving over bumps and potholes. The sound may change pitch or volume based on steering angle, and it often gets louder after cold starts when rubber is stiff. Some owners report a slight clunk when the car rocks side to side in the driveway, or a sustained creak that follows body roll during lane changes. The suspension itself may feel slightly looser or less responsive to steering inputs.
How to confirm it
- Park on level ground and rock the car side to side by pushing down on the door frame or fender. Listen carefully for creaking or clicking noises coming from under the car near the wheels.
- Visually inspect the sway bar bushings (rubber rings wrapped around the bar where it mounts to the frame). Look for cracking, permanent flattening, or obvious gaps between the bushing and its metal bracket.
- Check the end links (short rods connecting the bar to each strut). Grab them by hand and try to move them up and down. Play or excessive movement means the joints have worn out.
- Look for metal-to-metal witness marks, scuff marks, or shiny rubbed areas on the bar, bushings, or brackets that suggest contact or rubbing.
