The exhaust flex pipe bellows commonly fail on BMW models like the 1 Series E87 and 120i due to engine movement and age. This component absorbs vibration between the engine and exhaust system. When the bellows rupture or separate, exhaust gases leak into the undercarriage, causing noise, smell, and driveability issues. Flex pipe failure is one of the most frequent exhaust problems on these vehicles.
What it feels like
You will hear a hissing or popping noise from underneath the car, especially during idle or acceleration. The sound may be louder when the engine is cold. Many owners report a strong exhaust smell in the cabin or noticeably stronger odor near the undercarriage. The car may feel slightly slower on acceleration if the leak is severe enough to trip emissions sensors. Performance typically remains driveable, but the noise and smell are persistent and noticeable to anyone in or near the vehicle.
How to confirm it
- Perform a visual inspection underneath the car, focusing on the flex pipe bellows joint located near the engine outlet. Look for visible cracks, splits, or separation in the corrugated section.
- Listen carefully during idle and light acceleration for hissing or popping sounds coming from the exhaust system near the flex pipe location.
- Check for exhaust smell both inside the cabin and around the undercarriage near the flex pipe. A strong rotten egg or burnt smell concentrated in one area suggests an active leak.
- If available, use a smoke test or check engine light scanner to see if emissions sensors are detecting an exhaust leak code, which confirms the failure.
