Impact damage from road debris occurs when your BMW strikes a pothole, speed bump, rock, or other road hazard hard enough to physically dent, crack, or separate the exhaust pipe. This is most common on the rear exhaust section, where the pipe hangs exposed beneath the vehicle. Even a single solid impact can rupture the pipe wall or crack the flex bellows, immediately triggering driveability symptoms.

01

What it feels like

You will hear a loud rattling, dragging, or metallic scraping noise from underneath the rear of the car, especially over bumps or when accelerating. The exhaust may smell stronger than normal, or you might notice a burnt smell if the hot pipe is touching other components. In severe cases, you could see sparks or smoke coming from the undercarriage. Engine performance may feel unaffected at first, but exhaust leaks create backpressure loss and can trigger a check engine light related to oxygen sensor readings.

02

How to confirm it

  1. Jack up the rear of the vehicle safely and visually inspect the entire rear exhaust pipe and muffler for visible dents, cracks, separation seams, or split welds.
  2. Look for discoloration, heat marks, or contact wear where the pipe may be touching the fuel tank, suspension, or undercarriage.
  3. Listen for dragging or rattling noises while someone slowly drives the car, then recheck the pipe position once stopped.
  4. Review recent driving incidents involving harsh impacts, such as hitting a pothole or speed bump at speed, that coincide with when the noise started.
