Failing Strut Mount Bearing

A failing strut mount bearing sits at the top of your suspension strut and allows smooth rotation as the wheel turns. When this bearing wears, it can bind or stick, then release with a sudden pop or clunk. This typically shows up on 3-Series and related BMWs during turns at low speed or over bumps. The noise is often mistaken for CV-joint wear, but stationary steering tests can separate the two.
What it feels like
You hear a sharp pop or clunk from the front, usually when turning the wheel at low speed or parking. The sound comes from the top of the strut tower area, not from underneath. In some cases the noise repeats if you turn the wheel back and forth slowly. Over bumps, you may hear a similar pop if the suspension compresses at an angle. The car may also feel slightly clunky in tight turns, as if the wheel is catching or resetting partway through the turn.
How to confirm it
- Park on level ground and have someone turn the steering wheel lock to lock while you stand at each front corner listening at the top of the strut tower. A binding noise or resistance points to the mount bearing.
- Look at the strut top (accessible from the engine bay on most models) and check for visible cracks, separated rubber, or corrosion on the bearing seat.
- If you can safely access the strut top by hand, try to gently rotate it or feel for grinding or rough movement in the bearing itself with the suspension fully unloaded.
- Watch for spring wind-up or a visible jump in the coil spring as the wheel turns. Smooth operation means the bearing is likely sound.
Parts that fix it
A failing strut mount bearing typically requires replacement as part of a strut assembly or coilover kit. Full suspension refresh kits offer the most reliable fix and are available for most BMW generations:
