A worn outer constant-velocity joint on the front axle is a common source of clicking or popping noise during turns, especially when the steering wheel is at full lock or during slow, tight maneuvers. The noise occurs because the joint's internal ball bearings and races wear, losing their smooth rolling contact. This condition is particularly frequent on BMW models with front-wheel drive or xDrive systems where CV axles handle torque transfer to the wheels.

What it feels like

You'll typically hear a rhythmic clicking or popping sound that intensifies as you turn the steering wheel harder, especially at low speeds. The noise may be louder on one side (left or right) depending on which joint is failing. The sound often vanishes when driving straight or on gentle curves, and it can worsen during acceleration while turning. Some owners report the noise changes pitch with speed or becomes more pronounced over bumpy road surfaces during a turn.

How to confirm it

  1. Drive in a tight, slow circle in both directions (clockwise and counterclockwise) and listen for popping that correlates with steering angle. Note which direction makes it worse.
  2. Park and inspect the front axles. Look for torn or damaged CV boots, grease splatter on the inside of the wheel, or loose boot clamps that signal a joint is leaking lubricant.
  3. Raise the front end securely on jack stands. Grab the axle shaft near the wheel and rotate it slowly by hand, feeling for notchy resistance, grinding, or excessive play in the outer joint area.
  4. Compare the left and right CV joints side by side. A worn joint usually exhibits more play or roughness than the good one, making the difference obvious.
