Worn front control arm and thrust arm bushings are rubber or polyurethane components that allow suspension arms to pivot. When they crack, tear, or become oil-saturated, the wheel gains unwanted forward-and-back movement. This wear pattern is common on BMWs and often gets mistaken for bad struts because the symptoms overlap. A car with bushing wear will show clunks, shimmy, and a loose highway feel.

01

What it feels like

The car may clunk over bumps or when turning. Under braking, you might feel a shimmy or vibration in the steering wheel or through the chassis. The front end can feel loose or wander on the highway, especially in crosswinds or over dips. Some owners report uneven tire wear because the wheel moves excessively in the suspension envelope. These signs often happen together and can be mistaken for worn-out shock absorbers, but the root cause is bushing slop rather than damping loss.

How to confirm it

  1. Park on level ground and visually inspect the front control arm bushings and thrust arm bushings for cracking, tearing, or dark oil staining. Rubber should be firm and clean, not soft or saturated.
  2. Have an assistant sit in the driver seat and apply and release the brakes steadily while you watch the wheel relative to the fender. Excessive forward-and-back motion means bushing wear.
  3. Grasp the control arm near the bushing and pry gently with a flat bar. Excessive movement or clunking indicates a worn bushing or a loose ball joint.
  4. Take the car on a test drive and listen for clunks when turning or transitioning over bumps. Feel for shimmy under moderate braking and note any vague steering feel at highway speed.
