Worn Shock or Strut Damper

A worn shock absorber or strut damper has lost its internal damping force, usually from normal wear or fluid loss inside the unit. On BMWs this commonly shows up as bouncing after bumps, a floaty or unsettled ride, nose dive when braking hard, and longer stopping distances. The problem gets worse over time and affects both handling and safety.
What it feels like
The car bounces repeatedly after hitting a bump instead of settling quickly. Steering feels loose or vague, especially over dips and uneven pavement. The front end dips noticeably when you brake hard, or the rear squats excessively. Body roll feels excessive in corners. You may notice the ride height looks uneven from side to side, or that the car seems to "float" on the road rather than hug it. Tire wear may become uneven across the tread or from one side to the other.
How to confirm it
- Perform a bounce test at each corner. Push down firmly on the bumper or fender and release. A worn damper will allow the car to bounce up and down multiple times before settling, rather than returning smoothly in one or two compressions.
- Inspect each shock or strut body for oil stains, leaking fluid, dents, heavy rust, or corrosion. Fluid loss inside is a primary cause of damping failure.
- Take the car on a road test over a mix of surfaces: smooth highway, bumpy local roads, and hard braking. Note whether the body motion is excessive, if the car feels stable under braking, and whether left and right sides feel balanced.
- Compare the rebound and ride height behavior between the left and right sides. A single worn damper will show obvious asymmetry in how quickly each corner settles after a bump.
