A parking-light fault triggered by an incorrect bulb type or LED mismatch occurs when the replacement lamp does not match BMW's original specifications in wattage or current draw. Modern BMWs monitor lamp resistance during startup and self-test cycles; a non-standard or aftermarket LED bulb can fail these checks even if it lights up normally. This cause is common among owners who retrofit LED parking lamps without accounting for the car's electrical monitoring system.

What it feels like

The dashboard displays a parking-light warning message, often labeled "Check Parking Light" or similar, even though the lamp visually appears to be working. The fault may appear only at startup, during the locking sequence, or when the headlights are activated. Some owners report the warning comes and goes intermittently, especially if the bulb connection is marginal. In other cases, the warning is constant and does not clear after a restart. The parking light itself usually functions normally in terms of brightness and color.

How to confirm it

  1. Locate the parking-light bulb assembly on your model (typically in the front headlamp housing, but some BMWs also monitor rear parking lamps and side markers). Check the part number printed on the bulb and compare it to your owner's manual or parts diagram to confirm it matches OEM specification.
  2. Verify the bulb wattage matches the original. Mismatched wattage, especially in LED retrofits, causes resistance variation that triggers the monitoring circuit.
  3. If an aftermarket LED bulb is installed, swap it back to a standard incandescent bulb of the correct OEM type and wattage. Drive or cycle the ignition several times to see whether the warning clears.
  4. Check the bulb socket and connector for corrosion, loose pins, or moisture. A poor connection can mimic a bulb mismatch during the self-test.
  5. If the warning persists with a confirmed OEM bulb and clean connection, use a diagnostic scan tool to read the exact fault code and rule out a deeper harness or module issue.

Parts that fix it

Diagnostic scan tools allow you to read and clear the fault code, confirming whether the bulb change resolved the issue. LED retrofit bulbs may require a load equalizer or a different part number designed for BMW monitoring systems.
