A loose socket or corroded bulb contact will often cause your BMW's parking light warning to appear even when the bulb itself still works. These issues disrupt the electrical circuit path that BMW monitors to detect failed lamps. Corrosion, heat damage to the socket terminals, or poor contact tension all trigger the same warning message. This is a maintenance-level problem, not an emergency, but it needs attention to clear the fault code.

What it feels like

You'll see a parking light error message on the dashboard or iDrive display, usually naming the specific light (front left, front right, rear, or side marker depending on your model year). The light itself may work fine, flicker intermittently, or dim unexpectedly. The warning may disappear and return without warning, especially after the car sits overnight or after a short drive. Wiggling or pressing the lamp housing sometimes makes the error go away temporarily, which is a strong sign the socket connection is loose rather than the bulb being burned out.

How to confirm it

  1. Park the car and turn off the ignition. Locate the parking light socket that triggered the warning (this varies by model; check your owner's manual or service information for the exact location).
  2. Remove the bulb by twisting or pulling it straight out of the socket, depending on your model's design. Inspect both the bulb base and the socket terminals for white or green corrosion, black burn marks, or collapsed contact springs.
  3. With the bulb removed, wiggle the connector at the back of the socket while a helper commands the light on and off via the iDrive menu or by turning on parking lights. Listen or watch for any crackling sound or flickering, which confirms a loose connection.
  4. Use a dry cloth or fine-grit sandpaper (220 grit or finer) to gently clean the socket terminals and the bulb base. Wipe away any corrosion or oxidation. Check that the socket's metal contact springs have firm tension and are not spread open.
  5. Reinsert the bulb, twist it fully into place, and test the light. If the warning persists, replace the socket assembly or test the bulb with a known-good replacement from another light circuit.
