Loose Exhaust Flap Clip

A loose or bent retaining clip on the exhaust flap actuator allows the valve to rattle at idle or during low RPM driving. This is one of the most commonly reported exhaust noises on F-chassis and newer BMW models. The clip secures the flap mechanism and when it loses tension, vibration transfers through the exhaust system, creating an audible rattle that often comes from the rear of the car.
What it feels like
You will hear a metallic rattling sound that is most noticeable at idle or at low engine speeds. The noise typically comes from the rear exhaust area, near the left exhaust tip. Cold starts often make the rattle worse because the metal is stiffer when the engine is cold. The sound may disappear under load or heavy acceleration as exhaust pressure and engine vibration change. Some owners report the rattle is worse in certain gears or when the engine is holding a steady RPM.
How to confirm it
- Locate the rear exhaust flap actuator assembly near the left exhaust tip at the back of the car.
- Visually inspect the retaining clip that holds the flap valve in place. Look for bending, corrosion, breakage, or obvious gaps where the clip should be making contact.
- Gently try to move the clip by hand. A secure clip will not shift or flex excessively. A loose one will have noticeable play.
- If you have access to a diagnostic scanner, command the exhaust flap open and closed while listening for changes in the rattle frequency or intensity. A clip issue will rattle consistently regardless of flap position.
- Replace the retaining clip with a new one if it does not hold firm tension or shows visible wear or damage.
