Worn Exhaust Flap Bushings

Worn exhaust flap bushings allow the flap shaft to move excessively inside its mounting point, creating a metallic rattle at the rear of the exhaust system. This wear typically develops over time on F and G-chassis BMWs and shows up as a noise that may be steady, intermittent, or load-dependent. The clip or flap itself can still be intact, but the bushing around the pivot point has lost its grip.
What it feels like
You will hear a metallic rattling or tinkling sound coming from the rear exhaust area. The noise may be loudest at idle, especially when the engine is cold, or it may change character when you accelerate under load. Some owners notice the rattle stops when the flap is manually commanded open or closed via the electronic actuator, while others hear it regardless. The sound is distinct from a loose heat shield and is localized to the flap assembly rather than scattered across the undercarriage.
How to confirm it
- Allow the exhaust to cool completely. Locate the exhaust flap assembly at the rear of the muffler and attempt to move the flap shaft side to side by hand. More than a small amount of play (wiggle) indicates worn bushings.
- Disconnect the flap actuator electrical connector or manually hold the flap in a fixed position. Start the engine and listen to see if the rattle persists even when the flap cannot move. If it does, the bushing is the culprit.
- Inspect the shaft and bushing surfaces for carbon buildup, corrosion, or visible ovalization. A bushing that has lost its shape will not grip the shaft tightly and will allow rattle.
- Check the flap clip for damage or looseness separately. A worn bushing can coexist with a clip that still looks intact.
