Squeaky Strut Mounts

Squeaky strut mounts occur when the rubber bushings that isolate the top of the strut from the chassis wear out, dry up, or develop internal looseness. This is common on BMWs with higher mileage and shows up as a creaking or squeaking noise concentrated at the suspension towers. The problem typically worsens in cold weather, after heavy rain, or during weight transfer like braking and cornering.
What it feels like
You'll hear a distinct squeak or creak from the front or rear corners when the suspension compresses, especially over small bumps or dips in the road. The noise often comes during slow parking lot maneuvers, tight turns, or when the car bounces under its own weight. Some owners report the sound is louder when the engine is cold or after wet weather. In mild cases, the noise may only appear under diagonal loading (one corner compressed while the opposite lifts). The strut mount itself does not usually cause vibration or handling changes, making this a noise-only complaint in most situations.
How to confirm it
- Park on level ground and have a helper bounce each corner of the car up and down while you listen near the top of the strut towers (front and rear). Note which corner produces the squeak.
- Drive slowly over small bumps and dips in a quiet area, listening for the noise to pinpoint the direction and height of the sound source.
- Inspect the top mount by looking down into the engine bay (front) or lifting the rear seat (rear). Look for cracked or split rubber, visible gaps between the mount and strut shaft, or any obvious movement when you apply light hand pressure.
- Turn the steering wheel fully left and right while parked, then bounce that corner to see if the noise changes with steering angle. This can confirm an upper mount issue versus other suspension components.
- Test the suspension at full droop by slowly releasing air from the tires slightly, driving gently, then re-inflating. A squeak that worsens at full extension or compression points to the top mount.
Parts that fix it
Replacement strut assemblies or individual upper mounts address this fault. Match your BMW model and generation carefully when ordering. Install new mounting hardware and torque fasteners to spec to prevent the squeak from returning.
