Worn Control Arm Bushings

Worn control arm bushings are rubber or polyurethane mounts that connect the suspension arms to the subframe and steering knuckle. When these bushings crack, dry out, or separate, they lose grip and allow small movements that create squeaks. This problem is especially common on BMWs with higher mileage or those driven on rough roads, and it tends to worsen in cold or wet weather.
What it feels like
You'll notice a squeaking or creaking sound when driving over bumps, potholes, or small road imperfections. The noise may come from one corner or move between corners depending on which bushing is worn. Some owners report the squeak appears only when turning under load, accelerating, or braking. The sound often quiets temporarily after a fresh coat of grease but returns within days or weeks. In rare cases, you may feel a slight clunking or movement in the steering wheel during sharp turns if the bushing is severely degraded.
How to confirm it
- Raise the car on a jack or lift and unload the suspension so the wheel hangs freely. Walk around the car and check each control arm bushing (upper and lower, front and rear pivot points) for visible cracks, rubber separation from the metal sleeve, or fluid leakage.
- Use a pry bar or large screwdriver to gently apply load at the arm-to-subframe and arm-to-knuckle joints while listening with a stethoscope or by ear. A cracked bushing will often squeak or creak under this pressure.
- Apply a small dab of silicone grease or white lithium grease to the suspect bushing and immediately test the joint again. If the noise changes or disappears, the dry bushing is the cause.
- Lower the car and perform a road test over the same bump or pothole where you first heard the noise. Confirm whether the symptom matches the bushing you identified.
- If the squeak returns within a few days of greasing, or if the bushing shows cracks or permanent deformation, plan to replace the control arm or bushing kit.
