A steering wheel that sits off-center relative to the front wheels is usually a sign that the wheel was installed incorrectly on its spline, or that a realignment and steering angle sensor calibration step was skipped after recent service. If your BMW tracks straight and the suspension is sound, the fix is often as simple as recentering the wheel on the column. More complex cases involve misaligned toe settings or worn suspension geometry that must be addressed first.

01

What it feels like

The steering wheel appears visibly crooked when driving straight ahead. The spokes may be tilted left or right even though the car tracks in a straight line and does not pull or drift. Some owners notice the issue only when parked, while others spot it during highway driving. If the wheel is off-center by more than a few degrees, it becomes immediately obvious and annoying. The car itself drives normally, so the problem is purely a mechanical centering issue rather than a handling fault.

02

How to confirm it

  1. Drive the vehicle on a flat, straight road or lot with no crosswind. Place your hands at the 9 and 3 o'clock position on the wheel and check whether it appears level relative to the hood line and the road ahead.
  2. Verify that the vehicle tracks straight without pulling or drifting. If it pulls, suspect alignment or suspension wear first before assuming a wheel centering problem.
  3. Inspect the front suspension, ball joints, and tie rods for movement or wear. Rock the vehicle gently side to side and listen for clunks or movement at the front end.
  4. If suspension is tight and alignment is correct, have a BMW specialist or qualified shop remove the steering wheel and reinstall it centered on the spline. A professional alignment and steering angle sensor recalibration may be required afterward.
  5. Check tire wear patterns. Even wear front to rear suggests the problem is wheel centering. Uneven or feathered wear suggests toe misalignment or suspension damage.
