Worn or damaged suspension components such as bushings, struts, shocks, tie rods, and ball joints can shift the front end geometry enough to throw off the steering wheel alignment even after a basic alignment procedure. On BMWs, this is one of the most common causes of a centered steering wheel that sits crooked at highway speed or sits off-center while driving straight. The symptom often appears after hitting a pothole, curb, or following a front-end impact.
What it feels like
You may notice the steering wheel is not centered relative to the front wheels when driving straight, or it requires constant correction to keep the car tracking true. Some owners report the wheel sits cocked to one side even after an alignment. If suspension parts are severely worn, you might also feel vibration in the steering, detect uneven tire wear across the fronts, or notice the car pulls slightly left or right despite recent alignment work. Leaking dampers or a clunking noise over bumps can accompany this condition.
How to confirm it
- Park on level ground and visually inspect the front suspension. Look for torn rubber bushings, bent control arms, leaking strut or shock bodies, and excessive play in tie rods or ball joints by grabbing the wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock and attempting to move it.
- Check for recent impact damage such as scuffed or bent components, distorted mounting points, or asymmetrical wear on suspension hardware that may indicate a collision event.
- Measure wheel alignment using a proper alignment rack. Compare caster, camber, and toe on both sides. Caster or camber differences greater than 0.5 degrees side to side often point to bent suspension geometry.
- Before final alignment, repair or replace any visibly worn, bent, or leaking components. Alignment alone will not correct steering angle if the underlying hardware is damaged.
