BrowseThe G01 X3: BMW's Most Refined Sports Activity Vehicle Yet
The F25 was a solid platform, but the G01 X3 was BMW getting serious. Launched for the 2018 model year on the CLAR architecture, this generation brought genuine driving dynamics to the compact SAV segment without sacrificing the everyday usability that makes the X3 one of the best-selling Bimmers on the road. Longer wheelbase, lighter body structure, rear-biased xDrive tuning, and a much-improved interior - the G01 addressed nearly every complaint owners had with its predecessor. If you've been sleeping on this platform, it's time to wake up.
The engine lineup is where things get interesting for enthusiasts. The bread-and-butter xDrive30i runs BMW's B48 four-cylinder, a modular turbocharged unit that the tuning community has embraced with open arms. Don't let the four-pot fool you - the B48 is an overachiever from the factory, and with a solid tune it responds beautifully. The real crowd-pleaser is the xDrive M40i, powered by the B58 inline-six. If you've spent any time around the Supra community or the N54 crowd, you already know BMW's B-series turbocharged sixes are some of the most tune-friendly engines in the industry. The B58 in particular has become a legend in its own right - strong factory internals, excellent thermal management, and massive headroom for power with basic bolt-on engine upgrades. Stage 1 tunes on a stock M40i routinely push 400+ wheel horsepower with just a flash. Serious builds are pushing well past 500whp on the stock block, which would have seemed insane a decade ago.
Worth noting for 2021+ model years: BMW introduced the mild hybrid system (MHEV) on the B48 and revised the B58 slightly. These cars tune just as well, but make sure your tuner has specific calibrations for the updated hardware. Companies like MHD, Bootmod3, and Vargas Turbo have all done serious work on this platform and are trusted names in the G01 community.
Known Weak Points and Where to Spend Your Money First
No platform is perfect, and the G01 has a few areas worth keeping an eye on. The B58-equipped M40i models have been known to run warm under hard driving conditions, particularly if you're pushing power - an upgraded charge pipe and a quality intercooler should be near the top of your list before you get deep into tuning. The factory charge pipe has a well-documented history of splitting under boost pressure, and this is a cheap fix that can save you a headache on the highway. Check out our full selection of engine cooling and intake upgrades for vetted options.
Suspension is another area where the G01 leaves room for improvement, especially if you've spec'd your car without the M Sport package. The factory setup is comfortable and competent, but it's tuned for compliance over precision. Owners who want sharper turn-in and reduced body roll consistently point to aftermarket coilovers or sport springs paired with upgraded sway bars as the single biggest dynamic improvement you can make to this car. H&R, KW, and Bilstein all make excellent kits for the G01. Browse the full lineup on our Suspension page.
Wheels and tires are also worth revisiting early. The OEM rubber on most trims is decent, but upgrading to a stickier performance tire on a lightweight aftermarket wheel does wonders for both feel and lap times. The G01 looks aggressive on a proper set of 20-inch forged wheels, and dropping unsprung weight is one of the best dollar-per-lap investments you'll make. Mod Paths: Building Your G01 for the Street or the Track
Daily driver builds on the G01 are all about refinement. A Bootmod3 or MHD stage 1 tune, a Burger Motorsports JB4 for the B48 crowd, upgraded air intake, and a sport exhaust gets you a noticeably quicker, better-sounding X3 without touching ride quality or reliability. A quality cat-back from Remus, Eisenmann, or AkrapoviΔ transforms the sound character of both the B48 and B58 - these engines deserve to be heard. Explore sound clips and specs on our Exhaust page. Round it out with a front lip or side skirt kit from 3D Design or Maxton Design, and you've got a head-turning daily that backs it up with real performance.
Track-focused G01 builds are still a growing niche, but the community is getting serious. Beyond the power mods, a proper brake upgrade is non-negotiable if you're doing any lapping - the factory brakes fade quickly under sustained heat. EBC Yellowstuff or a big brake kit from Brembo are popular choices. Staggered wheel fitment, sticky summer tires, and a coilover setup with adjustable damping round out a proper canyon carver or HPDE machine. The G01 won't replace an E46 M3 at the track, but it'll surprise you - and probably everyone else in the paddock.
Whatever direction you take your G01, the parts and expertise are here. BimmerTalk stocks fitment-verified components from the brands that the BMW community has trusted for years. Build smart, drive hard.
