The brand on the bottle matters less than one thing most people skip reading: the BMW Longlife (LL) approval code. BMW licenses specific oil formulations that meet its own spec for its variable oil-service-interval system, high-revving engines, and (on turbocharged models) the heat the oil sees around the turbo. Running an oil without the right LL approval isn't necessarily going to hurt anything short-term, but it's not what the engine was engineered around either. Check your owner's manual or oil filler cap for your engine's required approval before buying any of these.

Amazon1. Liqui Moly Top Tec 4200 5W-30 - Best Overall
Liqui Moly is a German brand with LL-01 approval, and Top Tec 4200 specifically is the oil you'll see recommended most often across BMW enthusiast forums for N52, N54, N55, and older B-series engines that call for 5W-30 LL-01. It's not the cheapest option here, but it's the closest thing to a default recommendation when someone asks "what oil should I actually run" with no other context about their car.

2. Liqui Moly Special Tec LL 5W-30 - Best Value LL-01
Same LL-01 approval tier as the Top Tec 4200 above, from the same manufacturer, at a lower price per liter. The Special Tec line is Liqui Moly's more budget-conscious approved-spec range - you're not getting a lesser oil so much as a simpler formulation without some of the additional additive package in the flagship Top Tec line. For a car on a normal maintenance schedule without unusual demands, this is the pragmatic pick.

$59.45
3. Castrol EDGE Euro A3/B4 0W-40 - Best for Older / High-Mileage Turbo Engines
0W-40 is a common recommendation for higher-mileage N54 and N55 engines, where the slightly thicker high-temperature viscosity (the "40" in 0W-40 versus "30" in 5W-30) can help maintain oil pressure and reduce consumption on an engine that's put on some miles. Castrol EDGE's Euro A3/B4 spec is built for European engines specifically, and it's a genuinely popular alternative to the German-brand default above at a lower price.

4. Mann Oil Change Kit (Filter + Liqui Moly 5W-30) - Best All-in-One Kit
Skips the separate-filter-order step entirely - this bundles a Mann-Filter HU925/4x (a well-regarded OEM-equivalent filter brand) with Liqui Moly 5W-30 in one purchase, sized for E36/E39/E46/E83-era engines. If you're doing your own oil changes and don't want to cross-reference a separate filter part number, this removes that step.

$115.48
5. Castrol EDGE 0W-20 - Best for Newer B-Series Engines
Current-generation B46, B48, and B58 engines have moved to thinner 0W-20 as BMW's factory spec, chasing fuel economy and reduced internal friction on newer engine designs. If you're running a G20 330i, G05 X5, or similar current-generation model, check whether your engine calls for 0W-20 before assuming the thicker oils higher up this list apply - they generally don't on the newest engines.
