A blown fuse or failed relay cuts power to the fog light circuit entirely, leaving both lamps dark. This is one of the most common electrical causes of fog light failure on BMW models. Because many BMW generations route fog light control through different modules (FRM, FEM, or dedicated relays depending on year and chassis), fuse and relay testing is the first troubleshooting step in almost every fog light fault.

What it feels like

Both fog lights stop working at the same time, with no flicker or intermittent behavior. The headlights and other exterior lights operate normally. You may notice the fog light symbol illuminate on the instrument cluster or the fog light button produces no response when pressed. On some models, the fog light module or FRM may log an electrical fault code if the short is severe enough. The symptom is purely electrical: nothing mechanical fails.

How to confirm it

  1. Locate the fog light fuse in the fuse panel using your owner's manual or fuse chart. Do not rely on visual inspection alone. Use a multimeter set to DC voltage or resistance mode to test whether the fuse conducts current. A blown fuse shows infinite resistance or zero voltage across its terminals.
  2. If equipped with a separate fog light relay (common on older BMWs), check for power at both the relay input and output pins using a multimeter. Compare the relay part number to the OEM specification to confirm you are testing the correct component.
  3. Replace any blown fuse with only the specified amperage listed in your fuse chart. Installing a fuse with higher amperage can mask a short circuit and damage downstream components.
  4. If the fuse blows again within a few days of replacement, the circuit likely contains a shorted wire or a failed lamp. Inspect the fog light wiring harness for damage, moisture intrusion, or melted insulation. Test the fog light bulbs for internal shorts using the multimeter on resistance mode.
