A burned-out fog bulb is one of the most common causes of fog light failure on BMW vehicles. The bulb filament burns through from normal use or electrical stress, cutting off light output on one or both sides. This fault often triggers a dashboard warning and is purely cosmetic unless local law requires fog lights for inspection or winter driving. Replacement is straightforward and inexpensive.
What it feels like
One or both fog lights stop working completely, even though the switch operates normally. You may see a yellow or orange warning triangle or fog-lamp fault message on the instrument cluster or iDrive screen. The affected lamp produces no glow or illumination when the fog light button is pressed, while all other lights function as expected. The failure is sudden, not gradual dimming. No burnt smell or visible damage to the bumper or fascia occurs with a simple bulb fault.
How to confirm it
- Inspect the fog bulb directly. Access the lamp housing from behind the bumper or via a removable trim panel. Look at the filament inside the bulb for blackening, breakage, or a clearly darkened element. Obvious filament failure confirms a burned bulb.
- Swap the bulb from the working fog light side to the failed side if both lamps are equipped. Reinstall and test. If the fault moves to the opposite side, the bulb itself is bad. If the fault stays on the original side, wiring or module control is the problem.
- Test the suspect bulb with direct 12V power using jumper wires to a battery or power supply. A healthy bulb will glow; a burned bulb will not.
- Replace with the correct BMW-specification bulb matching your chassis and year. Use the exact part number from your owner manual or parts catalog to ensure proper fit and brightness.
Parts that fix it
Replacement fog light bulbs or LED assemblies matched to your BMW model restore function and eliminate the warning. Always verify fitment for your specific chassis generation.
