BMW fog lights that stop working are a common complaint, whether you notice one lamp is dark, both fronts are out, or you get a fog lamp failure warning on the iDrive screen. The problem shows up across a wide range of models and usually comes down to a burned-out bulb, a corroded connector behind the bumper, a blown fuse, or a faulty switch and control module. Because fog lights sit low and take road spray constantly, the failure rate is higher than most other lighting circuits on the car.

01

Sudden vs gradual

A sudden failure where the fog light goes out all at once almost always points to a burned-out bulb or a blown fuse. Bulbs fail instantly when the filament breaks, and a fuse blows the moment a fault in the circuit exceeds its rating. A gradual fade or flickering that gets worse over time is more typical of a corroded or loose connector, where resistance builds slowly until the lamp stops working entirely. A fog light that works sometimes and quits other times, especially when the car hits a bump, is a strong sign of a loose or damaged connector or harness. If both fog lights stop at the same time, the fuse, relay, or control module is more likely than a coincidental dual bulb failure.

02

Most likely causes

Most fog light failures on BMW come down to four areas. Here is what to check in order of likelihood.

Burned-out fog bulb. A failed filament is the single most common reason one fog light goes dark, often triggering a lamp failure warning on the dash.

Loose or corroded connector. The fog lamp connector lives inches off the ground and is soaked with water and road grime, making corrosion or a loose pin a frequent culprit.

Blown fuse or relay. A single blown fuse or failed relay can kill the entire fog light circuit, leaving both lamps inoperative with no other visible damage.

Faulty switch or control module. When the headlight switch module or footwell module fails, the command to activate the fog lights never reaches the lamps, even though the bulbs and wiring are fine.

03

What a mechanic checks

  • Bulb condition: Remove the fog lamp and inspect the bulb filament for visible failure. Swap left to right if both are the same type to confirm whether the fault follows the bulb. Test the bulb with 12V direct power if condition is uncertain.
  • Connector and harness: Unplug the fog lamp connector and look for green corrosion, bent or pushed-back pins, moisture inside the plug, or heat discoloration. Clean terminals with electrical contact cleaner and reseat firmly. Wiggle the harness while the lights are commanded on to expose intermittent faults.
  • Fuse and relay: Pull the fog light fuse and test it with a multimeter, not just a visual check. Confirm power in and out of the relay if the car uses a dedicated fog relay. Replace any blown fuse with the exact rated amperage and watch whether it blows again, which indicates a short.
  • Switch and module output: Check whether the fog light indicator illuminates and whether the switch sends a signal to the body module. Scan with a BMW-capable scanner for fault codes in the footwell module or front electronics module. Command the fog lights on through the scanner to separate a switch input fault from a module output fault.
  • Power and ground at the lamp: Use a test light or meter at the fog lamp connector to confirm 12V switched power and a clean chassis ground when the switch is on.

Cost context

Parts costs vary widely depending on which failure is found. A replacement fog bulb or LED upgrade assembly such as the TULALUX LED Fog Lights (Yellow Lens) for F30, F32, F33, and F36 models is priced at $55.43 and covers a straightforward bulb swap on 2, 3, and 4 Series cars. If diagnosis requires a BMW-capable scanner to read body module fault codes or command the fog lights, tools range from the Schwaben BMW MINI Diagnostic Scan Tool at $153.68 up to the schwaben i70BT at $359.99 for broader coverage. A professional shop performing a fog light diagnosis will typically charge at a labor rate of $100 to $175 per hour, depending on region. A simple bulb replacement may take under 30 minutes, while a module fault diagnosis can run to an hour or more. Total repair cost varies depending on root cause.

Can I keep driving

A non-functional fog light is a cosmetic and legal issue rather than a safety emergency. You can continue driving short-term, but there are real reasons to fix it promptly. Many states and countries require all factory-equipped lighting to be functional for a vehicle inspection, so a failed fog light can result in a failed inspection. Driving in actual fog, heavy rain, or snow with the lamps out reduces your forward visibility and your visibility to oncoming traffic in those conditions. If the failure is caused by a blown fuse and the replacement fuse blows again immediately, stop using the fog lights until the short is found, since a repeated short can damage wiring or other components on the same circuit.

FAQ

Is it safe to drive with a fog light not working?

For normal driving conditions, a failed fog light is not an immediate safety hazard. In fog, heavy rain, or snow, functional fog lights do improve low-speed visibility. Get it repaired before your next inspection, and before driving in conditions where you would actually use the lamps.

Why is only one fog light out instead of both?

A single fog light out almost always means a burned-out bulb or a bad connector at that specific lamp. A fuse or relay failure typically kills both lamps at once because they share the same circuit protection. If one is out, start with the bulb and the connector at that lamp before checking the fuse.

How much does it cost to fix a BMW fog light?

If the bulb is the problem, parts can run around $55 for an LED replacement assembly. If a module or wiring repair is needed, labor at $100 to $175 per hour plus parts applies. The total varies depending on which component has failed and the model year of the car.

Will a bad fog light cause my BMW to fail inspection?

In most US states and many other jurisdictions, all factory-installed lighting must function for a vehicle to pass inspection. A failed fog light is a common inspection failure item. Check your local regulations, but plan to repair it before your next inspection date.

Can water in the fog light connector cause it to stop working?

Yes. BMW fog lamps sit very low on the bumper and are exposed to constant water and road spray. Moisture entering the connector causes corrosion on the terminals, which increases resistance and eventually causes the lamp to fail or flicker. Unplugging, cleaning, and reseating the connector often restores operation.

Can I wait a few weeks to fix the fog light?

Short-term, yes, unless you drive regularly in fog or heavy rain where the lamps are actually needed. If the fuse keeps blowing, do not wait, since a repeated short can cause wiring damage. Otherwise, schedule the repair before your next inspection or the next period of poor weather.

Related symptoms

Other lighting issues on BMW often share causes or show up alongside fog light problems. These related complaints are worth checking if you are already inspecting the front lighting circuit.

  • Headlight foggy - moisture inside the headlight housing can also affect fog light lenses nearby
  • Foggy headlights - condensation and UV damage to lenses reduce effective light output on the front of the car
  • Headlight condensation - water intrusion into sealed lamp assemblies points to seal failures that can affect fog lights too
