Burned-Out Indicator Bulb

A burned-out indicator bulb is the single most common cause of hyperflashing turn signals in BMW models. When a front or rear turn-signal bulb fails or makes poor contact with its socket, circuit resistance spikes. The turn-signal relay interprets this high resistance as a bulb-out condition and switches on and off rapidly as a warning. This hyperflash typically affects one side of the vehicle, making diagnosis straightforward for most owners.
What it feels like
You'll notice your turn signal blinks much faster than normal, usually on the left or right side only. The hyperflashing rhythm is distinctive and noticeably quicker than the standard flash rate. Your instrument cluster may also display a bulb-out warning light or message, pinpointing which side has failed. The symptom usually appears suddenly rather than gradually, and both front and rear bulbs on the same side may fail simultaneously, especially if they share a common ground or power feed through a damaged socket.
How to confirm it
- Check whether the rapid blinking occurs on one side only (left or right) or both sides. Single-side hyperflash points directly to a burned bulb on that circuit.
- Walk around the vehicle and visually inspect every turn-signal bulb, front and rear. Look for a broken filament, blackened glass, or corrosion inside the socket. A failed bulb will show obvious damage under daylight.
- Remove the suspected bulb and examine its contacts. If the filament is intact but the bulb still hyperflashes, the socket may have corrosion or poor contact. Try swapping a known-good bulb of the correct spec into the suspect socket and retest the flash rate.
- If the hyperflash stops after bulb replacement, the diagnosis is confirmed. If it persists, check the instrument cluster for a bulb-out warning light on the same side, which will confirm the affected circuit.
- On newer BMWs with LED tail lights, a single failed LED module or driver may cause the same symptom. Inspect LED housings for internal condensation or darkening, which indicates module failure.
Parts that fix it
Most burned-bulb cases are resolved by replacing the failed bulb itself with a direct OEM replacement. Complete tail-light assemblies are available if the housing is damaged or if multiple LEDs have failed. Below are compatible rear light options for common affected models.
