LED Bulbs Without Load Resistors

LED turn-signal bulbs draw far less electrical current than traditional incandescent bulbs. When an LED is installed without a load resistor or CANBUS-compatible design, the vehicle's flasher relay or body control module sees abnormally low resistance and triggers a hyperflash (rapid blinking) as if a bulb has burned out. This is a common retrofit problem that shows up immediately after LED installation.
What it feels like
Your turn signals blink much faster than normal, often two or three times per second instead of the standard 1-2 Hz rhythm. The hyperflash happens on whichever side received the LED retrofit (or both, if you replaced both left and right). The car may also log a bulb-out fault code in the body control module. Nothing feels broken while driving, but the visual signal is unmistakable and cannot be ignored once you notice it.
How to confirm it
- Note the exact timing of when hyperflash began. If it started immediately after you installed LED turn-signal bulbs or LED strip lighting, the cause is almost certainly load-related.
- Check the LED bulb packaging or product listing for "CANBUS-compatible" or "load resistor built-in" labels. If neither is mentioned, the bulb is not load-compensated.
- Temporarily swap the LED bulb back to the original incandescent unit on the affected side. Start the engine and test the turn signal. If the blink rate returns to normal, you have confirmed the LED is causing the hyperflash.
- If you want to keep the LEDs, your fix options are to source CANBUS-compatible replacement bulbs, add external load resistors (bolt-on or splice-in type), or upgrade to an LED-capable flasher module if your BMW model uses a separate relay.
- If your car uses a body control module for flasher logic (most modern BMWs), you may need to reprogram coding or install the resistors in parallel with the bulb sockets.
