A corroded socket, loose connector, or high-resistance ground connection can trigger rapid blinking (hyperflash) in your turn signals or brake lights. This occurs because the electrical circuit reads the corroded connection as a failed bulb, triggering the load-sensing relay to flash faster. It is common in older BMWs and vehicles exposed to salt, moisture, or heat cycling. Cleaning the socket and checking ground points often resolves the issue without replacing the bulb.

01

What it feels like

Your turn signal or brake light blinks much faster than normal, often at double speed. The affected light may also dim inconsistently or flicker under load. You might notice the hyperflash only on one side (left or right turn signal), or it could affect brake lights when you press the pedal. The rapid blinking is most obvious when sitting stationary with the signal active. Some owners report the light seeming to work properly at night but misbehaving in daylight, or vice versa depending on the socket condition and circuit resistance.

02

How to confirm it

  1. Activate the affected turn signal or brake light and visually inspect the bulb socket from behind the lens. Look for white, green, or blue corrosion buildup on the metal contacts, heat discoloration, or cracked plastic.
  2. Remove the bulb and connector boot. Check the socket terminals for loose fit, bent pins, or oxidation. Wiggle the connector while the circuit is active and observe whether the blinking speed changes or the light cuts out momentarily.
  3. Measure ground resistance with a multimeter set to ohms. Probe from the bulb socket ground contact to a known good chassis ground point. Resistance above 0.5 ohms indicates a high-resistance connection; below 0.1 ohms is healthy.
  4. Inspect the harness and connector boot for water intrusion, cracked wires, or corrosion inside the connector cavity. Pay special attention to trunk and rear lamp assemblies, which are prone to moisture.
  5. Clean the socket contacts with a wire brush or fine sandpaper and the terminals with electrical contact cleaner. Reinstall the bulb and test for normal blinking speed.

Parts that fix it

If cleaning does not resolve hyperflash or if the socket is damaged beyond restoration, replacement tail light or turn signal assemblies are the most reliable fix. OEM and aftermarket options are available for most model years.
