A burned-out turn signal bulb is the most common cause of a non-working or rapidly flashing turn indicator on a BMW. The filament inside a standard bulb or a single LED segment can fail without affecting other lights, yet the car's onboard diagnostics will flag the fault. Most owners notice this as a dead indicator on one side or a warning flash that speeds up on the dashboard.
What it feels like
Your turn signal on the front or rear stops working entirely, or it flashes much faster than normal (often called rapid-flash mode). The dash may show an amber warning icon or a malfunction message. In some cases, the light appears dim or intermittent rather than completely dark. If both sides are affected, the problem usually lies elsewhere (fuse, switch, or module). If only the rear is intermittent, a connector or ground issue becomes more likely alongside the bulb failure.
How to confirm it
- Activate the turn signal and observe whether the front or rear indicator is completely dark or flashing at high speed.
- Walk around the car and visually inspect the bulb inside the affected lamp assembly for a broken filament or darkened glass.
- If the lamp uses LEDs, look for a single dark or dimmed segment within the LED cluster.
- Remove the bulb and test it with an ohmmeter (should show low resistance when the filament is intact) or use a basic lamp tester if available.
- Install a known-good replacement bulb and confirm the flash rate returns to normal and the dash warning clears.
