Corroded or burned lamp socket contacts prevent proper electrical flow to your turn signal or brake light bulb, even when the bulb itself is fine. This happens over time due to heat cycling, moisture, and current arcing at the connection point. BMW owners frequently report this fault on rear lights, often paired with intermittent operation or rapid-flash warning codes. Cleaning or replacing the socket assembly usually resolves the issue.

01

What it feels like

You'll notice one or both rear turn signals flashing faster than normal, staying off entirely, or cutting out intermittently. The dashboard may show a bulb-out warning even though the bulb is good. In some cases, the light works fine for a few minutes, then drops out until you wiggle the taillight housing or turn the car off and back on. If only one rear light is affected and the symptom comes and goes, a corroded socket is a strong suspect. Both sides failing at once points more toward a fuse or switch problem instead.

02

How to confirm it

  1. Remove the affected taillight assembly from the car and take out the bulb itself. Look inside the socket for black, brown, or white oxidation on the metal contacts or around the base of the socket well.
  2. Inspect the bulb's ground pin (the flat side contact) and the socket's corresponding clip for heat marks, pitting, or loose tension. The pin should snap in with firm resistance.
  3. With the bulb loosely seated in the socket, turn on the ignition and switch the turn signal on. Gently wiggle and rotate the bulb while watching for flickering or the light cutting out. Intermittent function under movement confirms poor contact.
  4. If corrosion is light, clean both the bulb's pins and socket contacts with fine-grit sandpaper (220-400 grit) or a pencil eraser. Reinstall and test. Heavy burn marks or pitting usually require socket or assembly replacement.
