Faulty Wiring or Connector

Faulty wiring or connectors between the turn-signal switch, module, and lamp can block the electrical signal entirely or cause it to drop in and out. BMW turn-signal circuits rely on clean, tight connections and unbroken wire runs. Corrosion, moisture, loose pins, pinched wires, or poor grounds in these paths will disable the signal or create an intermittent fault that appears and vanishes unpredictably.
What it feels like
A broken or corroded connector shows up as a completely dead turn signal on one side or both, or as an on-and-off blink that works sometimes and cuts out other times. You may notice the indicator bulb on the dashboard does not light, or it flickers. In some cases the bulb blinks much faster than normal, which signals a missing or partial circuit load to the module. Tapping the steering column or wiggling wires near the lamp assembly may momentarily restore the signal, a telltale sign of a loose connection or pinched wire rather than a failed bulb or switch.
How to confirm it
- Inspect the wiring harness near the steering column and the rear lamp assembly for visible damage: broken insulation, frayed or pinched wires, or crushed sheathing.
- Check all connectors in the circuit for moisture inside the socket, white or green corrosion on the pins, or a loose fit when you tug gently on the connector body.
- Use a multimeter set to continuity mode to test the wire path from the switch or module to the lamp socket. No beep or resistance reading means an open circuit.
- With the ignition on and turn signal activated, measure voltage at the lamp socket. No voltage drop across the connector pins suggests a wiring break downstream.
- Repair any damaged wire with a proper solder joint and heat-shrink tubing, clean corrosion from connector pins with contact cleaner, and re-test after reassembly.
