Incorrect Coilover Damping Setup

Incorrect coilover damping setup occurs when rebound and compression damping values are set too high on adjustable suspension, causing the car to bounce instead of absorb bumps smoothly. This is common on modified BMWs with aftermarket coilovers or on stock cars where damper settings have drifted. Excessively low ride height that pins the car onto bump stops compounds the problem by raising effective spring rate.
What it feels like
The suspension feels springy and uncontrolled, especially over small bumps and road ripples. After hitting a bump, the car continues to bounce several times rather than settling quickly. The ride may feel harsh and restless at highway speeds, and body roll during cornering can seem excessive because the dampers are not controlling motion effectively. On some setups, one side of the car may feel noticeably softer or bouncier than the other, creating an asymmetrical ride quality.
How to confirm it
- Check whether your BMW is fitted with adjustable coilovers or dampers. If the car is stock suspension on high mileage, move toward shock/strut and bushing inspection instead.
- Locate the damping adjustment knobs or dials on each coilover (typically on the shock body or remote adjuster). Note the current compression and rebound settings on all four corners.
- Reduce both rebound and compression damping by 2-3 clicks on all four corners and drive the car on familiar roads. Assess whether the bounce improves.
- Check ride height at all four corners using a tape measure from the wheel center to the fender lip. If the car sits extremely low (less than 1 inch of clearance to the fender), inspect for constant contact with bump stops during normal driving.
- Compare damping settings left to right and front to rear. Mismatched settings between sides will cause handling imbalance and one corner to feel softer than another.
