Worn Control Arm Bushings

Worn control arm bushings are rubber or polyurethane components that absorb suspension movement and keep the wheels tracking straight. As they degrade through age and mileage, the control arms lose their anchor points, allowing excessive vertical and lateral play. This causes the suspension to feel soft, bouncy, or unstable, especially on bumps or during cornering. High-mileage BMWs and cars exposed to harsh road conditions are most affected.
What it feels like
The most common complaint is a bouncy or floating ride quality that worsens over bumps or rough pavement. Drivers often report the car taking longer to settle after hitting a pothole, or the suspension feeling spongy rather than controlled. Steering may wander or feel loose, particularly on highway driving. A clunking or knocking sound from the front suspension during turns or over bumps is another telltale sign. Some owners notice uneven tire wear, especially if the bushing wear is asymmetrical between the left and right sides. The car may also feel less planted during aggressive cornering.
How to confirm it
- Lift the vehicle on jack stands and grasp the control arm firmly. Push and pull it vertically and laterally while observing any movement at the bushing connection points. Excessive play beyond normal mount compliance indicates wear.
- Inspect both front control arm bushings visually for visible cracks, splits, rubber separation, or fluid weeping if hydraulic bushings are used. Compare left and right sides for asymmetrical deterioration.
- Check for steering wander during a test drive at low speeds on a straight, empty road. Worn bushings often allow the steering to drift without driver input.
- Inspect tire tread wear patterns. Uneven wear at the inside or outside edge of the tire can indicate control arm bushing play affecting wheel alignment.
Parts that fix it
Replacement control arm bushings and kits range from individual bushing sets to complete front suspension control arm assemblies. Match your BMW model and generation to find the correct fitment.
