Worn shock absorbers or struts lose their ability to dampen suspension movement. The result is a car that bounces excessively after hitting a bump, taking far longer than normal to settle. This is one of the most common suspension faults on high-mileage BMWs and is especially noticeable on rough roads or after speed bumps.

What it feels like

The car continues to bob up and down after passing over a bump, speed bump, or pothole. Rather than one smooth compression and rebound, you feel multiple oscillations. The rear seat passengers often notice this more than the driver. On tight corners, the body may feel unstable or "floaty." Some owners report a harsh initial impact followed by a mushy, unsettled feel. Uneven wear on tires or a rattling noise from the suspension may accompany the bouncing, especially if bushings are also worn.

How to confirm it

  1. Perform the bounce test at each corner. Push down firmly on the bumper or fender, then release. Count how many times the car oscillates before it stops moving. A good shock will settle in one or two bounces. Three or more bounces points to worn damping.
  2. Inspect each shock and strut visually. Look for oil seepage around the shaft, split or cracked dust boots, or visible damage to the body. A thin film of oil is normal, but heavy weeping means the seal is gone.
  3. Take the car over a speed bump at low speed and pay attention to how the body feels. Listen for clunking or rattling. Note whether one corner feels worse than the other, which often means a single failed damper.
  4. Check the suspension geometry by walking around the car on level ground. Uneven ride height, sagging corners, or a nose-down stance can suggest weak rear shocks or broken spring perches.
