A burned-out license plate bulb is a cosmetic lighting fault where one or both rear license plate lamps stop working. The bulb filament simply burns through after normal wear, leaving the plate dark at night. This is one of the most common exterior lighting failures on BMW models and does not affect driveability or safety systems. Replacement takes minutes and costs only a few dollars for the bulb itself.

What it feels like

You will notice the license plate area is completely dark when your exterior lights are on, especially at dusk or night. If only one side is out, that lamp will be noticeably dim or off while the other side works normally. Both sides going dark at once is less common and suggests a fuse or wiring issue rather than dual bulb failure. The rest of your car's lighting operates normally. There is no warning light, no sound, and no effect on how the car drives.

How to confirm it

  1. Turn on your exterior lights and walk around to the rear of the car. Look directly at both license plate lamps to see if they are lit or dark.
  2. Open the trunk or remove the plastic trim panel behind the license plate to access the lamp assembly.
  3. Remove the old bulb by twisting it counterclockwise or pulling it straight out, depending on your BMW model year. Look at the filament inside. A burned-out bulb will show a broken wire or blackened glass.
  4. Install a new bulb of the correct type and wattage (check your owner's manual or the AutoZone reference for your specific model). Twist or push it in until it seats fully.
  5. Turn the lights back on and confirm the lamp now illuminates. If the new bulb does not light, check the fuse or have a technician inspect the socket and wiring.
