The check control module on your BMW handles several functions, including the power feed to the license plate lamps on many models. When this module develops an output fault on the lamp circuits, both license plate lights can go dark even if the bulbs and wiring are completely sound. This is a cosmetic issue, not a driveability problem, but one that needs verification before you replace parts unnecessarily.

01

What it feels like

You notice the license plate lamps are out, usually both sides at the same time. The dashboard may show a check control message related to exterior lighting. When you look at the bulbs, they appear intact and undamaged. If you've already tested the bulbs in another socket and they light up fine, or you've swapped them between left and right with no change, the fault likely sits upstream of the bulb itself, at the module or its feed circuit.

02

How to confirm it

  1. Check your vehicle service history or owner manual to confirm whether your model has a check control module that feeds the license plate lamps. Not all BMWs wire them this way.
  2. Locate the check control module (usually in the cabin fuse/relay box or under the rear seat depending on generation). Identify the output pins for the license plate lamp circuits using the wiring diagram for your model year.
  3. With the headlights on, probe for voltage at the module output pins that feed each lamp. You should see battery voltage (roughly 12V) on both pins.
  4. If voltage is present at the module output but the lamps still do not illuminate, verify the bulbs themselves and the ground path at each socket.
  5. If voltage is absent at the module output pins but present on the module input, the module output stage has likely failed and the module will need replacement.
