Water intrusion in lamp housing occurs when moisture or condensation collects inside the sealed light assembly, typically from a compromised gasket or housing crack. This causes corrosion of electrical contacts, bulb shorts, or component damage. It's a maintenance-level issue that won't affect engine or drivetrain function, but it will leave you with a non-functioning exterior light. The problem often appears after heavy rain, car washes, or seasonal humidity swings.

01

What it feels like

You'll notice one or both license plate lights, tail lights, or marker lights staying dark even with new bulbs installed. On closer inspection, the lens may look cloudy or you might see droplets on the inside of the housing. If you open the assembly, the metal contacts often show white, green, or brown corrosion. In rare cases, the bulb itself may flicker or fail intermittently as moisture bridges the electrical contacts.

02

How to confirm it

  1. Remove the affected lamp assembly from the vehicle and open the housing according to your BMW service manual. Document the specific model year and series (e.g., G22, F22, G82) for reference.
  2. Inspect the interior for condensation beads, standing water, rust spots, or green-tinged corrosion on the bulb socket and contact pins.
  3. Check the rubber gasket seal around the lens perimeter for cracks, hardening, separation from the housing, or visible gaps.
  4. If corrosion is light and the seal looks intact, dry the assembly thoroughly with compressed air or a lint-free cloth, then clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner and a soft brush.
  5. If the seal is visibly damaged or corrosion is heavy, the housing must be replaced; cleaning alone won't prevent recurrence.
