Failed Ground or Socket Connection

A failed ground or socket connection at a lamp prevents current from completing its return path to the battery, even when power arrives at the bulb. This typically shows as one or both exterior lights staying dark despite the bulb being intact. Corrosion, looseness, or physical damage at the socket ground are the usual culprits. It is a cosmetic fault and does not affect driveability.
What it feels like
You flip on the lights and one or both exterior lamps (tail light, fog light, or similar) do not illuminate. The bulb may look fine when you inspect it. If only one side is out, the socket or ground on that side is the likely source. If both sides are dark, check the shared fuse or feed wire first before assuming dual socket failure. No warning lights or performance changes occur, since this is a passive lighting circuit.
How to confirm it
- Switch on the lights and use a multimeter to measure voltage at the lamp connector pins. If voltage is present at the power pin but the bulb does not light, a ground fault is likely.
- Check continuity between the socket ground pin and a known chassis ground point (such as the negative terminal or a metal body panel screw). Poor or zero continuity confirms the ground is open or severely corroded.
- Visually inspect the socket terminals for white or green corrosion, burned spots, or loose/bent pins. Moisture and salt spray accelerate corrosion in older vehicles and coastal climates.
- If the socket looks corroded, clean the terminals with a wire brush or fine sandpaper, reseat any loose contacts, and retest. Replace the socket or connector if cleaning does not restore function.
