A damaged internal light tube inside your BMW headlight assembly causes the LED daytime running light (DRL) to dim, discolor, or fail entirely. This happens when the LED module overheats or sustains thermal damage, burning or darkening the fiber optic tube that carries the light. Unlike a simple bulb failure, internal tube damage often requires replacing the whole headlight assembly, not just the module.

01

What it feels like

You'll notice one or both DRLs looking dim compared to before, or they may be completely dark. The affected light might appear yellowed, orange, or have visible dark spots where the tube burned. If only one side is damaged, a side-by-side comparison makes the problem obvious. The rest of the headlight (low beam, high beam, turn signal) may work fine, which confirms the issue is isolated to the LED ring or tube circuit. Moisture or corrosion inside the headlight can make symptoms worse over time.

02

How to confirm it

  1. Park in a safe spot with daylight on. Compare both DRLs side by side. Note any dimness, discoloration, or complete darkness on one side.
  2. Scan the vehicle with a BMW diagnostic tool or generic OBD scanner for fault codes related to the headlight circuit. Codes like "LED module malfunction" or "DRL control module fault" support this diagnosis.
  3. If safe to access, remove the headlight assembly and inspect the LED module for heat damage, burn marks, or discoloration on its surface.
  4. Look at the light tube element inside the headlight. Dark spots, black marks, or yellow/orange discoloration on the fiber optic tube confirm internal damage.
  5. If only the module shows damage and the tube is clean, a module replacement may be enough. If both are discolored or burned, plan for complete headlight replacement.
