A failed DRL LED emitter is a burned-out light source inside your BMW's headlight assembly. The daytime running light stops working on one side while the main low beam continues to function normally. This is common in modern BMW models with integrated LED rings or light tubes, especially after several years of use. The emitter itself often cannot be replaced separately, so the entire headlight assembly typically requires service or replacement.

01

What it feels like

You notice the daytime running light is completely dark or very dim on one side of the car. The opposite side glows normally. If you turn on the main headlights, the low beam still works fine on the failed side. The DRL ring or light strip may show discoloration, cracks, or a hazy appearance inside the lens. Some owners report the light faded gradually over weeks or months before going out completely. Side-by-side comparison makes the problem obvious, especially during daylight inspection.

How to confirm it

  1. Park in daylight and compare both DRL rings or strips. Check whether the left and right sides match in brightness and color.
  2. Turn on the main headlights and verify that the low beam illuminates normally on the failed DRL side. A working low beam rules out wiring or power loss issues.
  3. Inspect the dark DRL lens closely for discoloration, moisture inside the headlight, cracks, or burned areas around the LED emitter.
  4. If available, pull any diagnostic fault codes using a BMW scanner to confirm a DRL circuit fault or LED module failure.
  5. Check the opposite headlight for comparison. If the other side is bright and clear, internal LED failure on the dark side is very likely.
