Water intrusion into the headlight housing can corrode the DRL module, connectors, and internal light paths, causing the daytime running light to fail, dim, or turn yellow/discolored. This problem is common on BMW models with LED rings or light tubes. Moisture enters through failed seals, lens cracks, or drainage ports. It often appears after heavy rain, car washes, or seal degradation, and typically requires headlight disassembly and component replacement.
What it feels like
The DRL on one or both sides stops working entirely, dims unexpectedly, or glows a hazy yellow or orange color instead of the normal white. You might notice the discoloration only from the outside, or see condensation fogging the lens from inside the headlight. The fault may come and go depending on humidity, or worsen over time as corrosion spreads. The high-beam and low-beam functions often still work normally, which is why the problem can be easy to overlook until the DRL symptoms become obvious.
How to confirm it
- Park the car in daylight and compare both headlights side by side. Look for yellowing, haziness, water droplets, or visible corrosion inside the lens or housing.
- Check whether the DRL failure appeared after a recent heavy rain, car wash, or water exposure. Moisture-related faults are often time-linked to these events.
- Scan the vehicle with a BMW-capable diagnostic tool to pull any DRL or headlight module fault codes. This confirms the problem is electrical, not just cosmetic discoloration.
- Inspect the headlight housing, connector terminals, and DRL module for green corrosion, rust deposits, or heat discoloration. Open the headlight access cover or remove the headlight unit if safe to do so.
- Dry the housing with heat (hairdryer on low, or warm air) and test the DRL again over several hours. If it works after drying, the seal has failed and moisture will return.
Parts that fix it
Protective lens covers or full headlight replacement units are the most common repair. Choose the part that matches your BMW model and generation.
