Faulty DRL Module

A faulty DRL module is an internal failure of the LED driver or control unit inside the headlamp assembly. Instead of a simple burnt-out bulb, the module stops supplying power or regulation to the daytime running light circuit. This is common on newer BMW models with LED rings or light tubes, especially after moisture intrusion or thermal stress. Replacement of the module or full headlamp assembly is the typical repair.
What it feels like
The daytime running light on one or both sides goes dim, flickers, or shuts off entirely, even though the main headlamp beam works fine. You may see the DRL come on for a moment during startup and then fade or extinguish. The affected side often looks noticeably dimmer or discolored compared to the other headlamp. In some cases, the light may not come on at all, or it behaves erratically depending on outside temperature or how long the car has been running.
How to confirm it
- Scan the lighting system with a BMW diagnostic tool or OBD2 reader to check for headlamp or LED module fault codes. A code pointing to the DRL circuit or module confirms the electrical failure.
- Observe the DRL during engine startup and as the engine warms. Note whether it comes on briefly and then cuts out, or whether it stays off from the start.
- Inspect the affected headlamp assembly from the outside for water spots, discoloration, or visible heat damage inside the lens. Open the hood and look at the module connector for corrosion or loose terminals.
- If the headlamp design allows, swap the suspect module with the opposite side or test the module on the other headlamp to see if the fault follows the part or stays with the location.
