A genuinely capable BimmerCode dongle at half the price of an OBDLink CX, as long as you know its limits on G-series and third party apps.
What I like
- +Handles BimmerCode's heavy TP protocol data loads without dropouts, unlike older iCar Pro units
- +BLE support means it actually works with the iOS BimmerCode app, not just Android
- +Street price around $40-50 makes it a no-brainer entry point for hobby coders
- +Works fine with BimmerLink for basic diagnostics and live data too
- +Small, cheap enough to leave permanently plugged into a project car
What I don't
- -Firmware and Bluetooth pairing stability aren't as polished as OBDLink's
- -Secure Gateway coverage on newer G-series chassis is inconsistent, verify before buying
- -Hit-or-miss support with Carly and ProTool, don't buy it expecting either to work reliably
Bottom line
Buy this if you've got an E90, F30, or early G20 and just want to run BimmerCode or BimmerLink from your phone without spending OBDLink money. Skip it if you're on a newer SGW-equipped G-series car doing serious coding, or if you also want it to double as a Carly or ProTool adapter.
I've had a Vgate vLinker BM+ kicking around my toolbox for about a year now, mostly because a forum member asked me to test it against the OBDLink CX I normally recommend. Short version: it's a legit BimmerCode tool at roughly half the price, and for a specific type of buyer that's exactly what matters.
What it actually is
This is a Bluetooth OBD2 dongle built specifically around the BimmerCode workflow rather than a generic scanner with BMW support bolted on. The key spec that matters here is TP protocol handling. BMW coding sessions push large, sustained data transfers when you're rewriting module configs, and cheap adapters choke on that, dropping connections mid-write which can leave a module in a half-coded state. The BM+ was engineered to handle that throughput, and it's a real step up from Vgate's older iCar Pro Bluetooth generation, which I never fully trusted for anything beyond reading codes.
Real world use on E90, F30, and G20
On my own G20 330i and on a mate's E90, coding sessions with BimmerCode went through clean. Retrofit-style changes, comfort access tweaks, lighting coding, all completed without the dreaded "connection lost" popup that used to plague budget dongles. On an F30 I tested with, same story. These are chassis where the FEM/BDC and standard CAN bus setups are well understood by BimmerCode's engine, so the adapter's job is mostly just moving data reliably, and it does that.
Where it gets murkier is G05 and other current G-series cars with full Secure Gateway implementation. BMW locked down direct module access harder on these platforms, and pass-through support depends entirely on what BimmerCode's backend has certified for that specific chassis and function. The vLinker BM+ isn't guaranteed to get you past SGW restrictions just because it worked on your buddy's F30. Check BimmerCode's own compatibility list for your exact VIN-era before you buy, not after.
App and iOS notes
This is actually the adapter's strongest selling point. A lot of budget OBD2 dongles are Android-only because of how Bluetooth Classic vs BLE works, and Apple's stricter Bluetooth stack has burned plenty of cheap adapters over the years. The BM+ uses BLE specifically so it plays nice with iOS, and in my testing the BimmerCode app on an iPhone paired and stayed paired without the fuss I've seen from other budget units. Android users get full coverage including older E-series and R-series Minis built 2008 or earlier, something iOS BimmerCode doesn't support regardless of which adapter you use, that's an Apple app limitation, not a hardware one.
Where it falls short
Firmware polish is the honest gap between this and the OBDLink CX. The CX's driver stack and Bluetooth 5.1 implementation are just more mature, more consistent across reconnects, and better documented for third party tools. If you want to run BimmerGeeks ProTool or Carly off the same hardware, don't count on the vLinker BM+ to be your universal adapter. Carly in particular is picky about supported hardware and BMW-focused retailers routinely tell buyers to check Carly's own approved list first. I've seen it work intermittently with ProTool but I wouldn't build a workflow around that.
For a deeper look at how these two stack up feature by feature, I wrote a full OBDLink CX comparison that covers the price gap in more detail. And if BimmerCode itself is new to you, the adapter compatibility guide is worth a read before you commit to any hardware.
Who it's for
If you own an E90, E92, F30, F22, or an early-to-mid G20 and just want to run BimmerCode or BimmerLink from a phone without spending CX money, this is a sensible buy at street price around $50. If you're on a heavily gatewayed newer G-series car, want rock solid firmware reliability, or need one adapter that also plays with Carly and ProTool, spend the extra and get the OBDLink CX instead. This is a value tool that does one job well, it's just not the job for everyone.
