BMW Differential Fluid - 75W-90 GL5, LSD Additive, and xDrive

Differential fluid gets neglected more than any other fluid on BMWs, probably because there's no warning light for degraded gear oil. I've inspected E46 M3 differentials that still had original fluid at 80,000 miles - the fluid was black and smelled burnt. The LSD clutch packs were worn down significantly. A $30 fluid change every 40,000 miles would have kept them in perfect condition.

Standard Open Differential - 75W-90 GL5

BMW rear differentials without LSD use 75W-90 GL5 gear oil. Redline 75W-90 and Royal Purple 75W-90 are both excellent choices that meet or exceed the BMW spec. The volume is typically 0.8-1.0 liters on E and F chassis rear differentials. The fill plug is typically a 14mm hex on the differential housing - fill until fluid runs out of the hole, then reinstall. Simple job, no tools required beyond a fill pump and the correct socket.

LSD - Friction Modifier Required

The M differential on the E46 M3, E9x M3, and S chassis M cars uses a mechanical LSD with clutch packs that require a friction modifier additive. Using straight 75W-90 GL5 without LSD additive causes clutch pack chatter under cornering loads - you hear it as a clunking or chattering sound during parking lot turns. The modifier reduces static-to-dynamic friction ratio to allow the clutch packs to engage smoothly.

Redline 75W-90 with limited slip additive pre-mixed is the simplest solution - no separate additive needed. Alternatively, BMW's own Hypoid axle oil with LSD friction modifier added works correctly. Volume for the E46 M3 Getrag M-differential is 0.85 liters. The BMW part number for friction modifier is 83 22 2 282 583 (the older bottle) - add 50ml to regular 75W-90 GL5 if you're not using a pre-mixed LSD-specific oil.

xDrive Transfer Case Fluid

The xDrive all-wheel drive system used on X3, X5, and all-wheel drive 3/5 series models includes a transfer case (Verteilergetriebe) that requires its own fluid service. BMW specifies their own ATF-branded fluid for the transfer case, but ATE Original LT 71141 and Pentosin ATF-1 are compatible alternatives. The interval is 50,000-60,000 miles, though most BMWs arrive at high mileage with original fluid still in the transfer case.

The xDrive rear differential on these platforms often uses a different fluid spec than the standard rear diff - confirm with your VIN on the BMW ETK parts catalog before ordering. The F15 X5 xDrive rear diff uses 75W-140 GL5 in the M-spec variant and 75W-90 GL5 in the standard open differential configuration. Getting this wrong and using 75W-90 where 75W-140 is required accelerates gear wear under high load conditions.
